Artist Statement & Artist Biography

Artist Statement:

I think the role of an artist is to portray beauty: to nourish the spiritual soul with light and colour. I love painting on location or "plein air" using media, like pastels, which vividly portray colour and light patterns which move me emotionally. Sometimes I enlarge these plein air studies in oil or acrylic to create larger landscapes to create even larger emotional impact. I try to express my emotional response to the sights and sounds of nature by using media in a gestural, loose way to help transport the viewer to their sensory memories of a place: the changing light of cloud patterns, rustling sounds of weaving fields of wildflowers and colourful fall trees.

Artist Biography:

I am a lifelong learner and a “work in progress” and enjoy teaching as well as my own art practice. I am a graduate of the Ontario College of Art Drawing and Painting program (A.O.C.A) where I returned later to earn a BFA. I am also a graduate University of Toronto (BEd) and the University of Ottawa (BA in English). My paintings are also shaped by my experience teaching high school art and photography for many years. Teaching photography has made it second nature for me to focus on the patterns and mood of light as well as employ depth, texture, and colour to portray a moment in time.

My evolution as an artist had several detours while I focused on teaching, raising a family and international travel. I am currently an instructor for the Oakville Art Society and for the Town of Oakville Culture programs and have been artist in residence at Crawford Lake Conservation area. I have been honoured to participate in juried shows including online shows for Pastel Artists Canada and the West Hamilton Artists Tour as well as Brampton's Beaux Art Gallery, Burlington Fine Art Association, Oakville Art Society, Joshua Creek Art Centre, McMaster Innovation Park. I have also shown in solo and group shows at the Dundas' Carnegie Gallery, Bronte's Sovereign House, Oakville's Micheal's Hair Design, ARTWORKS Oakville, and the Monday Painters plein air exhibits at the Dundas Museum and Archives.

I am currently having fun exploring pastels, acrylics and water based oils and discovering the beautiful Canadian landscape in my own backyard.
